5 pieces to heat up your wardrobe this Summer

The warmer weather is here and that means a whole different vibe when it comes to your wardrobe. Whether you’re dressing up or dressing a bit more casually, the rules are slightly different when the temperature rises.

While it’s tempting to simply throw on that old tee and short combo that you’ve had for a while because it’s so hot, it’s probably not going to be appropriate for every occasion. When summer comes around, it also means the festive season with plenty of events - backyard bbqs, work Christmas events, New Year’s Eve - it’s just a really busy time of year that calls for at least a few new items.

We’ve rounded up 5 things that will spice up your summer wardrobe - and that you can keep in rotation in your wardrobe year round as well.

Short sleeve shirt (preferably printed)

When it comes men’s fashion, nothing beats a short sleeve shirt - at least in the warmer weather anyway. Just to clarify, a short sleeve shirt means a button down shirt. It’s the ultimate outfit anchor that can be dressed up or down.

For a casual summer backyard BBQ look, wear it open with a white tee underneath paired with some shorts - more on those two items later. For those more daring, try a floral print one or if you’re just getting started in patterns, a subtle geometric pattern on a simple colour can be a great look as well.

You can even dress it up to wedding standards! If it’s an outdoor wedding that has a bit more of a relaxed dress code, pop a fun floral printed one on underneath a lightweight sport coat - then you can take it off for dancefloor antics later. Otherwise, wear it with a couple of buttons open over some smart shorts or chinos for an easy beach dinner look.

Short Sleeve Shirts

Chino short

As the temperatures soar, it becomes acceptable to wear shorts almost all the time. A great addition to the wardrobe to get you through the heat is the chino short. So simple yet so versatile, we’re surprised this isn’t already in every guy’s wardrobe.

Made of mostly cotton with a tiny bit of stretch, it’s the perfect lightweight (and comfortable) option to finish the bottom half of any outfit. Buy a neutral colour option like a latte chino short if you want something that goes with everything - including those fun printed short sleeve shirts we just talked about. But we guarantee you’ll love them so much, you’ll want a few other colours as well. We recommend stone and blue to finish off this new wardrobe favourite.

Chino Shorts

A variety of simple block coloured t-shirts

While we do love ourselves some prints, sometimes you just need to keep it simple. For various reasons such as being able to pop it on underneath a busy short sleeve shirt or for easy, breezy summer dressing - a simple block coloured t-shirt is the perfect summer wardrobe staple.

You probably already have a white t-shirt - who doesn’t, right? - but it also probably needs replacing. The unfortunate thing about white tees are that they tend to stop being white after a while. So when you get that new white tee, why not add a few other versatile colours like black, sky or even pink? They’re all options you can throw over the chino shorts or even denim for the odd cooler night.

Coloured Shirts

Summer-appropriate shoes

Because your wardrobe’s changed a little with the warmer weather, it also means your footwear choices need to be switched up. With good shorts comes great responsibility… not to wear the wrong shoes with it.

Leather boots with shorts are probably a no go unless you’re a tradie or farmer and and you’re going to work. It’s also too heavy to wear with light denim. For a casual or just summer appropriate occasion, try a smart boat shoe which goes great with all the above. Otherwise simple white leather sneakers or a low top casual shoe are also a really good hot weather wardrobe additions.

Lighter denim

Jeans are probably the last thing we want to wear on a 35+ degree day but if they’re a part of your all-year round wardrobe, that’s okay too. But the arrival of the heat means you should pack away the heavy indigo and black denim.

Instead opt for a lighter wash jean or denim short which you can pair with those fun short sleeve shirts we talked about earlier. Alternatively pair it with a fresh white sneaker and tee for that classic clean cut look.

Lighter Denim

These are just some basic staples that every guy should have for the warmer weather. Once you have these and for those more daring, shop some of Ed Harry’s bold New Arrivals styles to make a statement this summer.
